Wild Belle’s Natalie Bergman On DIY Hair Hacks and Magic Flea Markets
With her lullaby-ready voice and flaxen hair, Wild Belle singer Natalie Bergman has become a poster girl for the Electric Folk ovement spawned by The Black Keys, Lissie, and Edward Sharpe. She’s also emerging as a style star, making frequent appearances at Fashion Week front rows and parties for cult labels like Maje and Mara Hoffman. (Having fans like Alexa Chung and Lindsay Wixson doesn’t hurt, either.)
We caught Bergman backstage at Governor’s Ball to discuss DIY hair hacks, Instagram wardrobe staples, and whether vintage finds come with magical powers. (Spoiler alert: Obviously.) You’re performing in outdoor festivals all summer, but you still need to look
camera-ready. What’s the biggest challenge when dressing for a daytime show?
Like a lot of things in life, I think the biggest challenge is acceptance. Guess what? It’s hot outside. I’m in a rock band. I’m going to get messy. I’m going to get a little sweaty. I’m going to have tangled hair and dirty jeans when I get off stage, but it feels good, because it means I’ve lived in those clothes and I’ve really performed in those clothes and given it all I’ve got. So the first thing with summer fashion, for me, is making sure it’s not perfect, making sure it actually looks better in the flaws.
What about makeup?
Keep it simple! I’m pretty natural with makeup anyway, but a summer music festival—or anything outdoors in summer—is not really the time to try out a crazy makeup look, you know?
Because stuff melts and smears, and it doesn’t feel good to have a lot of products on your face when it’s hot and you’re outside. So sometimes all I’ll really wear is that Maybelline Great Lash Mascara—you know, the kind in the green and pink tube? The waterproof one works really well and it’s definitely my favorite.
Your hair has its own fan pages on Tumblr. What’s your secret?
Do I sound like a jerk saying, “Thanks, but I don’t really do anything to it?” I don’t mean to be an asshole, I’m sorry, but literally, I just leave it alone. I let my friend bleach my hair for me, and it hasn’t been growing as fast as it usually does—it usually grows really fast—so I don’t even have to trim it as much anymore… and my haircuts, I mean, I know how to do that at home in the bathroom… And ometimes I just cut it myself! My mom used to do it for me, ever
since I was little. So I guess the secret is to leave it alone as much as you can… And I don’t like hairspray. I don’t like anything sticky. Let it be free.
