James Cameron Reveals Avatar 4 Will Be A Prequel
Writer and director James Cameron has revealed his plans for making Avatar 4 a prequel to the other Avatar films.
Despite only currently working on the second and third instalments of the Avatar franchise, Cameron is keen to look ahead to the possibility of a fourth film.
Speaking to MTV news about future Avatar films, Cameron revealed: “I have an idea for a fourth. I haven’t really put pen to paper on it, but basically it goes back to the early expeditions on Pandora and what went wrong with the humans and the Na’vi.”
Cameron went on to add further details about the reasons for making a prequel movie, when it comes to Avatar 4: “Because when we drop in, even in the first film, in Avatar 1, we’re dropping into a process that’s 35 years into a whole colonisation. It’s a logical thing to do because we’ll have completed the thematic arc by the end of three. The only thing left to do is go back to see what it was like on those first expeditions and create some new characters that then become legacy characters in later films. It’s a plan.”
Avatar fans will however have a while to wait until they can watch Avatar 4 as the second film is not expected to be ready for cinema release until 2015, according to producer Jon Landau. Filming for the second and third films will occur back-to-back in order to speed up the process, however as of yet the scripts for the two films have not been completed, so filming will not commence until they are done.
