Director Len Wiseman To Reboot The Mummy Franchise
According to film site Deadline.com, Total Recall director Len Wiseman is set to reboot the popular Mummy film franchise.
Universal Pictures have already signed scriptwriter Jon Spaihts to begin work on writing the new screenplay for a new Mummy film. The studios hope to have the film ready for an ambitious summer release in 2014.
It is no wonder why Universal Pictures plan to reboot the franchise. The trilogy of the Mummy films released over 10 yeas ago was incredibly successful amongst a worldwide audience, being some of Universal’s highest earning films. The concept of the movies was based open the original Karl-Fruend directed Boris Karloff films released back in 1932.
If any man is to successfully bring back the Mummy franchise then surely Wiseman is the man for the job. The talented director recently launched the successful Underworld franchise staring his wife Kate Beckinsale and helped to revamp the Die Hard series with his film Die Hard 4.0
Wiseman revealed to Deadline that he has been approached to direct this fourth film, stating that producers pitched: “A great new take and approach, and a very different mummy.” Speaking of the new script he added: “It’s a darker twist on the material, a scarier version”, perhaps suggesting the film may not be targeted at the same family audience as the first three films.
As of yet there are no details of whether the reboot will feature any of the old cast, however it seems likely this ‘new approach’ Wiseman mentions may suggest an altogether original younger cast.
