Billboard Name Katy Perry Woman Of The Year
Katy Perry has been awarded the title of Woman Of The Year by Billboard magazine.
Katy is one of the biggest popstars in the world, who continues to sell records back-to-back. Earlier this year Katy’s 3D documentary style movie Part Of Me was a box-office hit, with fans keen to catch a glimpse of the real Katy behind-the-scenes of her music projects.
After the film was released, the repackaged version of her number 1 hit album Teenage Dream saw sales go up a whopping 400%. From this album Katy spawned five Billboard number 1 hit singles, being the first female in history to do so, whilst putting the album closely behind Michael Jackson’s Bad. On top of this she is the only artist to have ever had a single in Billboards Top 100 chart for 69 consecutive weeks.
Despite having a great year in terms of her career, Katy’s personal life over the last 12 months has been more of a rollercoaster. In December Katy split from husband Russell Brand, and the star was thought to be heartbroken. She has since found a new romance with singer John Mayer.
Bill Werde, editorial director of Billboard has spoken about the magazine’s decision to reward Katy with the title of Woman of the Year. Werde revealed Katy was chosen as: “she is one of the most inspiring artists in the industry.” He added: “Katy Perry broke into the industry not even five years ago, and has already accomplished more than most artists can hope for in an entire career.”
Katy’s record sales speak for themselves, as it’s reported she has sold over 48million singles in the US alone.
In 2011, Katy was placed number 3 on the Forbes highest-earning female musicians list, as her pre-tax earnings of the year totaled $44million, her earnings for 2012 are expected to top the huge sum.
Katy will be officially honored by Billboard at the Billboard Women in Music event, which is due to be held in November.
