Choosing a razor
The most important factor in preventing irritation and ugly red bumps along the bikini line is your choice of razor. The more blades, the better the shave. Spring for a more expensive razor if you can; it’s easy to save money by using this razor only for your bikini area while continuing to use normal disposable twin blades for your legs. A nice razor and a couple refills should last you all summer, since the razors will last longer and you shouldn’t shave your bikini line more than once or twice each week.
If you use an electric razor, do so with caution. It is best to first trim the area, and then go in for a close shave after most of the hair is gone.
How to shave
When shaving, try to use a shaving cream or gel. If you use soap, be sure to lather the area to be shaved thoroughly. It’s best to wait until the end of your shower to shave, since the warm water will soften the sometimes thick hairs. If the hair is longer than a quarter of an inch, shave in the direction of the hair’s growth. Although the shave will not be as close, you are much less likely to cut yourself than if you shaved against the direction of the hair, like when shaving your legs. If the hair is less than a quarter inch, try shaving across the direction of growth for a closer shave.
Shaving the bikini area can require awkward positioning which can lead to a risk of slipping in the shower. You can easily avoid this by shaving in the bath or sitting on the edge of your shower, or even using a slip-resistant bath mat.
Be sure to blot your skin dry after shaving, rather than rubbing, as rubbing can irritate the skin. Also avoid using lotion or scented powder/sprays in areas immediately near the shaved area. If your skin becomes irritated, there are a number of possible problems and solutions.
First, make sure that your razor is new and sharp and that you are using plenty of lubrication, whether that is soap or shaving cream. Do not—repeat, DO NOT—try to dry-shave this area.
Second, although it may seem silly, make sure your underwear or pants are not too tight. The chafing of fabric can easily irritate this sensitive skin. Try shaving at night so that you can go “commando” in PJ bottoms for the time immediately following your bath or shower.

If the irritation persists, a final resort is to try using aftershave. Although it is not pain-free, if used immediately after shaving it should eliminate even the most stubborn signs of irritation.
If you are razor-shy, there are two main economic alternatives: a chemical hair remover or waxing. Chemical hair removers such as Nair® often cause less irritation; however, you should do a small test before using it on a large area in case you are allergic. The downfall of a chemical hair remover is that they rarely remove all the hair in an area. It is quite common for hair to break off above the follicle or dissolve only partway, and the area may require future touch-ups. On the plus side, chemical hair removers are quite user-friendly and do not require much experience.
Waxing should be used only if you have a great deal of experience; poor waxing jobs can result in pain, bruising and hickey-type sores along the bikini line. If you are not familiar with waxing, it is best to go to a salon and have the hair removed professionally. Although it may cost more, it is money well spent.
